Swinging on Birches Live

  • Armathwaite Old School Hall Front Street Carlisle, England, CA4 9PB United Kingdom (map)

An innovative female powerhouse trio bring their lush, intricate soundscapes to the venue, weaving together songs, tunes and close harmonies rooted in Scottish traditional music.

Swinging on Birches consists of Juliette Lemoine (cello), Madeleine Stewart (fiddle) and Heather Cartwright (guitar & vocals), three musicians who have each been making their mark on the Scottish music scene individually before joining forces. Juliette brings a background in trad/jazz fusion and classical training, Madeleine draws on a lifelong grounding in traditional fiddle music, and Heather contributes her own songwriting alongside traditional material and fingerstyle guitar. Heather, in particular, will be a familiar face to some, having previously played the hall with Sam Mabbett in 2025.

Individually, each member has already built an impressive reputation. Heather supported Kris Drever on his UK solo tour in 2024, Juliette's debut album was long-listed for the Scottish Album of the Year Award in 2023, and Madeleine was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award, also in 2023. Together, they've performed at prestigious festivals including Edinburgh International Festival, Celtic Colours and Rudolstadt Festival.

Since launching in Autumn 2025, the trio have enjoyed a highly successful UK tour, a sold-out performance at Celtic Connections 2026, and an appearance at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Dunard Centre. Their programme blends self-penned tunes from Juliette and Madeleine with original songs from Heather, interspersed with carefully collected traditional material, resulting in music that feels both grounded and exploratory.

Please bring your own drinks.
