The Controlled Burn Tour… Arthur Coates & Kerran Cotterell

  • Armathwaite Old School Hall Front Street Carlisle, England, CA4 9PB United Kingdom (map)

Arthur Coates & Kerran Cotterell are a two-man trad tornado, tearing through the folk world with fiddle, guitar, foot percussion, close-knit harmonies and groove to spare. Just a couple of lads with a tangle of strings, they somehow summon the sound, swagger and sheer punch of a much bigger band. Expect rolling basslines, offbeat charm, tall tales and a streak of serious silliness — all delivered with warmth, wit and irresistible energy.

Straddling tradition and invention, their music bridges the folk archive with a fearless modern edge. Clean, crystalline tunes rooted in contemporary trad sit alongside joyful detours into blues, jazz chords, pop turns and Québécois-inspired grooves — sometimes landing somewhere between Vulfpeck and Le Vent du Nord. Raised in Aberdeenshire, Arthur’s riff-heavy fiddle playing draws deeply from his family’s musical heritage, while Cumbrian-born Kerran brings melodic craft, rhythmic drive and crisp harmonies shaped by pop and choral training. Together, they create music that’s playful, powerful and impossible to sit still to.

Since meeting at Sidmouth Folk Week in 2018, Arthur and Kerran have grown from pub jam sessions to festival favourites across the UK and beyond, earning praise as “one of the very best live acts” from broadcaster Mike Blackburn. With appearances at major festivals including Sidmouth, Shrewsbury, FolkEast and the Scots Fiddle Festival — plus international acclaim following tours of Québec and Ontario — they’ve quickly become one of the most talked-about acts on the circuit.

Fresh from their acclaimed album Music for Cows (2024), they’re now firing up material from their upcoming release Controlled Burn (due February 2026): a bold, original set packed with foot-stomping grooves, driving tunes and a few tracks that come in smoking hot. Expect trad turned sideways, storytelling with soul, and grooves that smoulder, spark and occasionally catch fire.
